PAYDAY 3 Returning Player Guide: Start Here

Start by rebuilding your loadout rather than importing a launch-era build. PAYDAY 3 now uses Skills 2.0, customizable Armor 2.0 and weapon perks. The checklist below connects those systems without assuming that your old equipment still behaves the same way.

Before you queue

1. Install the available game update. This guide was checked against official documentation through 3.10.1 on 8 November 2026.
2. On PC, test without outdated mods or modloaders after the Unreal Engine 5 transition. Verify game files if the clean installation still has problems.
3. Check your account: new players can start with an automatic platform-linked Nebula account; existing players should keep their established account. Manual linking matters for cross-platform progression.

Prepare a usable loadout

Open the skill editor, check your actual point budget and choose a role. EDGE, GRIT and RUSH builds are historical. Next select an armor frame and compatible plates, then read weapon perks: blue-hand effects need the item held; green-holster effects are persistent. Use the shooting range to compare weapon changes before judging them in a heist.

Find your next job

The new tutorial introduced in 3.6 teaches the basics through a story mission. Campaign mode provides a revised narrative around heists; it is not a promise that each campaign entry is a separate new map. Previously paid heists are included in the base game, but that does not make every weapon, outfit or Crimebond free. Detailed map routes need current evidence because several heists were reworked.

During and after a loud run

Watch the HEAT meter beneath the game-state indicator. The 3.6 description says it fills as police are defeated; when full, they retreat to reorganize. Use that quieter window for objectives instead of assuming every assault follows an old fixed timer. After the run, check your selected Contract and its reward requirements. This is an editorial preparation sequence, not a guaranteed speedrun or XP farming route.
